This
morning we packed up and headed to Bordeaux airport
where
we said a very fond au revoir to Peta.
We've
really enjoyed our ten wonderful days together
and
it was sad, however it shouldn't be too long
before
we see her again :-)
We
then set of for Tours, 349k's & 3½ hours drive.
Along
the way we called in to Cognac.
On
the banks of the River Charente amid vine-covered countryside,
Cognac
is known for the double-distilled spirit
that
bears its name and on which the local economy thrives.
On
the way into town we spotted our first Chateau
it's
small but very pretty.
Cognac
centres on a cafe-ringed central roundabout, place François 1er.
From here, the old town and most of the Cognac distilleries are
downhill towards and along the river. I had the addresses of a few of
the visitors centres and were disappointed when we found they were
all closed!
Even
the Office de Tourisme was closed. We knew that yesterday was a
public holiday all over France but even Google couldn't tell us what
was going on! We gave up, had a baguette for lunch and headed to
Tours, our base for the four nights from where we'll explore the
Loire Valley.
Our
hotel room is very spacious and when we checked in
the
lovely young lady at reception mentioned that
breakfast
is free for over 60's!
I'm
not sure if we should be happy or insulted!
Today
we've walked 7.94 k's.
