Cannes
This
morning was warm and sunny when we set off on a day trip to Cannes,
20 k's south of Antibes. On arrival we parked the car beneath the
Palais
des Festivals et des Congrès...
a convention centre in Cannes & the venue for the Cannes Film
Festival. When back to ground level we could see much hustle and
bustle going on in preparation for the upcoming 2017 Film festival.
The
red carpet!
Just
a few of the handprints along the boulevard...
Isabella
Rossellini
Catherine
Deneuve
Angelina
Jolie
Julie
Andrews
This
one is for you Michael Mack...Andrew thinks I'm crazy!
We
then went for a stroll, soaking up the sun and sea breeze along La
Croisette, a mile-long promenade that skirts the shore, you can
lookout on the sparkling Mediterranean and the rolling Esterel Hills.
The
wide pedestrianised walkway runs between the sandy beach and the
coastal road, on which you find all the fancy hotels and posh
boutiques.
There are plenty of bars and
restaurants along the beach...
You
can just take a seat on the Croisette itself - there are blue metal
seats for this purpose, and you can position yourself under the palm
trees. It's fantastic for people watching, and for admiring the
sports cars that glide along the boulevard.
As
we headed toward Le Vieux Port, a picturesque
marina for boats & yachts
stands at the tip of the boulevard we were surprised to see signs
welcoming 'Ninja Warrior' to Cannes...these photos are for you
Georgia!
We
had crepes for lunch...delicious paper thin affairs filled with
Proscuitto & Raclette cheese...delicious.
Chateau
de la Napoule is a 10 minute drive south of Cannes...Barry &
Agneta recommended visiting this unique Neomedieval Chateau set in
an idyllic beachfront location overlooking the bay of Cannes...was
rescued by an American couple, Henry & Marie Clews, artists and
visionaries who after buying the ruined medieval fortress in 1919,
worked tirelessly to bring it back to life. From the 1920's through
to the 50's Chateau de la Napoule was a meeting place for artists,
intellectuals, princes, princesses...
The gardens...
In the studio...
Love
these doors...
Under
one of the towers Henry (1876-1937) and Marie (1880-1959) Clews are
buried in a way which evoked the love and the complicity of the
couple: in the crypt the two tombs are half-open as if the spirits of
Henry and Marie moved the stones to find each other...
in the room above the tower.
in the room above the tower.
The
only access to the room is a small window...so that their spirits can
escape above the sea and be rejoined for eternity.
That's
what I call romantic.
We've
seen so many HUGE boats on the Cote d'Azur here are s few more that
we passed on our way back to the car.
Speaking
of the car...here's our hire car...I call it the Discomobile...it's
very bright on both the outside and inside. The black shiny inserts
in the centre console and doors have a glittery finish...some purple quilted inserts add to the very busy interior palette!
Today
we walked 11 k's.
