From
1309 to 1377, Avignon was the seat of the Catholic popes and remained
under papal rule until becoming part of France in 1791. This legacy
can be seen in the massive Palais des
Papes (Popes' Palace) in the city
centre, which is surrounded by medieval stone ramparts.
Our hotel is absolutely next door to the palace...
This
photo was taken just a few steps from the front door of our hotel!
The
main street of every town seems to be Rue de Republique
& here is the
one in Avignon.
We went for a wander around town...
We
visited the imposing Palais
des Papes and were particularly impressed when we found that you can
walk the ramparts! Amazing views...
Today was warm, sunny and quite windy...particularly up in the ramparts!
Nearby
are the remains of the Saint-Bénezet bridge, also known as Pont
d’Avignon. We walked along a part of the city walls to get there...
Andrew
took quite a few photos of interesting doors today...here are a
few...
He also enjoys zooming in on stone carvings, here are a couple taken today...
Today
we have walked 12.7 k's, many of them on stairs...Andrew thinks this
statue sums up the way he is feeling at the end of today...exhausted!
