Sunday
April 2nd
Undeterred
by the drizzle, we set out this morning for the local market our
neighbour told us about. The atmosphere was great with many people out on a rather dismal Sunday morning shopping for fruit, vegetables, meat, eggs, bread and
a variety of other tasty morsels. I couldn't help myself when I saw
these strawberries, just had to buy them 2 kilos for 5 euros (about
$7)...they smell amazing and are absolutely delicious. Andrew was
keen to purchase something to cook for dinner and we decided on a
boned chicken stuffed with...well we're not sure what, but it tasted
great!
We
spent the rest of the morning exploring Quarter Renaissance Saint
Jean, an area preserved from the time of the Renaissance (16th
- 17th
Century). The narrow, cobbled streets are full of charm, lots of
cafes and shops selling chocolates and other gourmet delights...the
chocolate shops are filled with Easter Eggs at the moment. I'm sure
you won't be surprised when I tell you that we stopped for coffee and
a cake.
From
this area we could look up and see the impressive
Basilique
Notre Dame de Fourviere.
We
travelled up the funicular railway to visit this beautiful church
and
observe Lyon from this high vantage point.
Inside the Basilique
Lyon
from on high! The drizzle had cleared but it was still quite
overcast.
On
our way back down from there we called in to Theatres Romains de
Fourviere. Lyon used to be a Roman city and has a lot to offer in
terms of history and architecture. The amphitheater is in great
condition and is amazingly still in use!
If you look carefully in the photo below you might be able to find me close to the centre of the amphitheater.
From
there we travelled down another funicular railway line to
Place Bellecour and caught our last glimpse of the Basilique Notre
Dame de Fourviere before heading back to our apartment.
Today
we walked an impressive 14 k's!
I'll
leave you with a photo of my personal chef serving up dinner...
the
chicken we bought this morning!
