We
had a quiet morning at the apartment that included a lovely long chat
to Adam. It was great to see his smiling face, he and Sammy are doing
a great holding the fort back home. We were pleased to hear that
although there has been a huge amount of rain there has been no
damage to our humble abode.
This
afternoon we set off to explore Marseille...at
its heart is the Vieux-Port (Old Port). A huge ferris wheel and huge
mirrored area provide much interest.
That's us...looking up at the mirrored roof!
We
were impressed by the view of the Romanesque-Byzantine Notre-Dame de
la Garde overlooking Vieux-Port.
From
there we explored the
maze-like streets of hillside Le Panier, the oldest part of town,
hold a heady mix of cultures. It
surges up from the north of the Old Port, its tall, narrow houses
draped with washing and criss-crossed by steep cobbled steps.
The
17th-century Vieille Charité was
a poorhouse built between 1671 and 1749 and consists of a
three-storeyed gallery looking onto an inner courtyard with a
striking, elliptical, domed chapel as its centrepiece.
It
continued to be used as an old people's and children's home until the
end of the 19th century, then became a barracks and finally a shelter
for the homeless.
Eventually
the buildings were restored and today house a cultural centre,
research units, and museums and galleries containing permanent
collections of African, Oceanian and Amerindian art, Mediterranean
archeology, as well as temporary exhibitions.
We
enjoyed a coffee in the courtyard and then wandered back to the apartment...on the way we saw...
Another
one of Andrew's little cars...love the French parking style!
Yesterday
I asked the question “Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?”
It's
Matthew...
A
great night out with our nephew, living and working on a super yacht
here.
Hope
to see you again very soon Matt xxxx.
Today
we walked 11.1 k's.
